📝 What Is Carbon Footprint Calculator?

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gases (mainly CO₂) emitted directly or indirectly by your daily activities. This calculator focuses on four key areas: transportation, diet, air travel, and home energy—which together account for most individual emissions. Understanding your footprint is the first step toward reducing it. By identifying which activities contribute the most, you can make targeted changes—like switching to a plant-based meal, biking instead of driving, or upgrading home insulation—that collectively lower your climate impact. This tool empowers you to take informed action toward a more sustainable lifestyle, benefiting both the planet and your well-being.

🧮 Formula

Total CO₂e (kg/year) = Transport + Diet + Air Travel + Home Energy. Transport = (car miles/y × 0.411) + (bus miles/y × 0.089) + (train miles/y × 0.041) using EPA emissions factors. Diet uses average emissions per meal type: omnivore 2.5 kg/meal, vegetarian 1.5, vegan 1.0, multiplied by weekly meals then by 52. Air Travel = short-haul flights (per flight × 0.25 tCO₂) + long-haul flights (per flight × 0.75 tCO₂) based on distance. Home Energy = (electricity kWh/mo × 12 × 0.453 kg/kWh) + (natural gas therms/mo × 12 × 5.3 kg/therm) + (heating oil gallons/mo × 12 × 10.2 kg/gallon). Solar or renewable credits subtract proportional emissions.

💡 Tips for Best Results

🚗 Walk, bike, or use public transport for short trips—saves emissions and improves fitness.
🥗 Try one plant-based meal per day to cut diet-related carbon emissions by about 30%.
✈️ Reduce air travel or choose direct flights (takeoff/landing burn the most fuel) to lower your air travel footprint.
💡 Switch to LED bulbs and unplug electronics when not in use—home energy savings are immediate and visible on your bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this carbon footprint calculator?
It uses peer-reviewed emissions factors from the EPA and IPCC, providing a reliable estimate. For best accuracy, enter your own utility bills and travel logs rather than using defaults.
What is a good carbon footprint target to aim for?
The global average is about 5 tons CO₂e per person per year. To stay within the 1.5°C climate goal, aim for 2–3 tons annually. Small changes across all four categories can help you get there.
Does the calculator store my personal data?
No. All calculations happen locally in your browser—your inputs are never sent to a server or stored. You can clear the data by refreshing the page.
